Ahead of the first ever senatorial elections in Cameroon, the body in charge of organizing elections, ELECAM, has published a list of 17 polling stations for the Southwest region.
The list of polling stations was contained in a decision signed by the Director General of ELECAM, Mohaman Sani Tanimou, on Tuesday March 26, 2013.
According to the document, the 855 councilors in the Southwest will vote as follows:
216 councilors will vote in 4 polling stations at GHS Limbe, for Fako division, 84 councilors will vote in 2 stations at GPS Bangem for Kupe Muanenguba, while 92 will cast their votes in 2 stations at GTHS Fontem in Menji, Lebialem division.
Manyu division has 2 polling stations at GHS Mamfe for 106 councilors; Kumba has 3 polling stations at GBPS Kumba-Mbeng for 144 councilors, while the remaining 213 councilors in Ndian division will vote in 4 polling stations at Catholic School Mundemba.
Talking about the role of his office during the April 14 polls, the Southwest Regional Delegate of ELECAM, Mr. Njang Emmanuel explained that it would be strictly that of organization.
“There is a commission that is set up by law, comprising a chairperson, who is supposed to be a personality within the community, then representatives of the political parties taking part in the elections. So the role of ELECAM at that level is supervisory,” Njang said.
End of Biometric Voter Registration
Also, a few days to the end of the biometric registration for the Municipal and Parliamentary elections, the delegate said he was pleased that the Southwest have beaten their record of 2011 Presidential polls.
“Prior to Presidential elections in 2011, the Southwest region registered only 251,000 potential voters, but this time around, we have registered 306,673 potential voters.
Even though we have to compare this statistics with our target, we are slightly above 50%, the target which was assigned to the Southwest region was a little on the higher side. Yet, that did not deter us from working towards that objective,” he affirmed.
Nevertheless, the Southwest ELECAM boss decried the attitude of the population, some of who wait till the dying minutes to get registered.
“Again, our registration centres are being flooded in spite of invitation for people to come and get registered early enough, and to avoid overcrowding. Notwithstanding, we are encouraging our staff to bear the stress that goes with the registration process, so as to register as many potential voters as possible,” Njang said.
