Emblematic player of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, across the African continent and the European Champions League, Samuel Fils Eto’o has announced he is quitting international football to concentrate on his club career with Chelsea FC of London, England.
The best all time Lions’ goal poacher made public his intention to his co-players of the Lions’ den after their match against the Libyans in Yaoundé, September 8 2013. Eto’o wished the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon and the players a successful campaign as they pursue the playoff matches for the road to Brazil 2014.
The captain of the Lions is four-time winner of the Best African Player of the year award and Best Scorer so far for the final phase of the African Cup of Nations.
In the build up to the match against Libya, information trickling in from the Lions’s den say Eto’o had a standoff with the German-born coach of the Lions, Volker Finke on Achille Kouamou Webo and Carlos Idriss Kameni starting the match against Libya following Eto’o’s request. A request Finke was not comfortable with.
Other observers of Cameroon football and the Indomitable Lions admire Eto’o for his scoring dexterity but will quickly fault him for being a high-handed player and dictating his pace in the Lions’ den at the anger of other players.
It is alleged across Cameroon that Eto’o “bought” the captain band from Lions’ former Coach, Frenchman Paul Marie Le Guen at the detriment of then captain of the Lions, Rigobert Song Bahanack, now Team Manager of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.
