Limbe, Cameroon
Police in Idenau have opened investigations into the incident of a fisherman who died on Tuesday March 12, after allegedly performing rituals at Debunscha fishing port, Limbe.
The man of Nigerian nationality, and identified only as Leo, is reported to have consulted a soothsayer because he had gone for some time without a good catch.
Although Leo was said to be well and hearty, and even shared a drink with friends on Monday night, his wife discovered he was growing weak, when she tried to wake him up to go fishing at 4am on Tuesday.
The woman immediately alerted neighbours, but the man died while arrangements were being made to rush him to hospital.
Prior to the burial which took place on the same day, family members of the deceased are reported to have cut off both his hands and buried them separately, believing this would stop their brother from working in an afterlife.
In a related story, fishermen in Limbe resumed work this Thursday March 14, after more than one week of inactivity.
Instructions to stop fishing for a while were allegedly given by a purported prophet, invited by the fishermen to perform some rituals, in order to improve their catch.
It is also alleged that to get the ‘prophet’ execute the rite, hundreds of fishermen from Down Beach, Mboko, Mboma, Kange and other fishing ports, contributed ten thousand francs each.
